Evangelos Marinakis’ Funded Stadium Cleanup Draws Global Coverage

For the first time in over a century, Athens’ all-marble Panathenaic Stadium, the “Kallimarmaro,” is undergoing a full, systematic cleaning. The Hellenic Olympic Committee is leading the project with private funding from shipping magnate Evangelos Marinakis’ Capital Maritime & Trading Corp., and guidance from Greece’s Culture Ministry.

What began as a domestic restoration story has turned into a genuine international news moment. The Associated Press wire report on the cleanup, byline Derek Gatopoulos and Theodora Tongas, was picked up and republished within hours by outlets across multiple continents and languages, an unusually wide syndication run for a heritage-preservation story.

The AP version then ran on ABC News in the United States and on U.S. News & World Report, both citing the same conservator and committee president.
