NORDEN delivers first maritime emissions reductions through RSB Book & Claim

NORDEN has delivered the first verified maritime emissions reductions through the RSB Book & Claim registry in a pilot with Microsoft and the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB).

According to NORDEN, the transaction marks the first time a maritime carrier has issued and delivered verified emissions reductions through the RSB registry.

Microsoft has also become the first company to use Book & Claim for shipping emissions through the RSB registry.

Book & Claim targets shipping emissions

The Book & Claim model allows companies to purchase verified emissions reductions linked to sustainable fuels without requiring those fuels to be used on their specific voyages.

This means companies can address emissions from maritime transportation even when sustainable fuels are not physically available on the ships carrying their cargo.

NORDEN, Microsoft and RSB have extended the RSB Book & Claim framework to maritime transport. The framework has previously been used in aviation.

“This transaction demonstrates how Book & Claim can help bridge that gap,” said Anne Jensen, COO at NORDEN.

She added that the model allows companies to invest in verified emissions reductions from maritime transport regardless of where the sustainable fuel is used.

NORDEN becomes first certified maritime operator

To complete the transaction, NORDEN became the first maritime operator to obtain RSB Book & Claim trader certification.

The certification is required to issue and sell verified emissions reductions through RSB’s Book & Claim registry.

RSB developed the maritime certification in cooperation with NORDEN by extending its existing framework to cover maritime transport and carriers.

“Decarbonising supply chains requires solutions that are both credible and scalable,” said Bella Horstmann, Senior Manager, Market Development at Microsoft.

She said the collaboration demonstrates how Book & Claim could support emissions reductions in sectors where decarbonisation remains complex.

RSB plans wider maritime adoption

Following the pilot, RSB plans to update its Book & Claim Chain of Custody procedure to support broader adoption across the maritime industry.

NORDEN will also continue working with customers and partners to expand the solution.

The shipping company aims to make verified emissions reductions available more widely to customers using ocean transportation.

“Extending the RSB Book & Claim framework to maritime transport is a direct response to that goal,” said Max Eichelbaum, Director – Digitisation and Book & Claim at RSB.

He added that NORDEN’s certification could help open the system to the wider shipping industry.
