Dozens of U.S Navy sailors fell ill after they were exposed to diesel exhaust fumes from the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Nebraska on June 22, 2026.

According to the Navy, about 64 service members experienced coughing, lightheadedness, headaches, dizziness, and nausea on a routine pier shift at the Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor in Silverdale, Washington.

Six sailors suffered from breathing problems and were admitted in the hospital but were later released.

The affected members were close to a backup diesel generator when the poisoning occurred, along with severe irritation in the eyes, throat and nose.

The cause of the incident has not been revealed yet, and the navy is working to identify the issue.

The navy said that the diesel generator doesn’t affect the submarine’s nuclear reactor when it is running.
