France has sent mine countermeasure vessels to the Strait of Hormuz as part of a joint international mission to secure navigation in one of the world’s most critical shipping routes handling 20% of global oil and gas supplies.
French President Emmanuel Macron said that the country is willing to work with allies and partners to ensure the safety of navigation in the critical waterway.
Sources suggest that minehunters, escort frigates, and maritime patrol aircraft will be available to assist in the mission if needed.
The news comes months after continued trade and shipping disruptions in Hormuz and the Gulf region, which have affected global shipping and energy markets.
Macron also added that it was moving forward with the deployment following discussions with the Sultan of Oman.
He also announced that the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle will return to its home port in Toulon while the country’s mine countermeasures assets will remain in the region as discussed with Oman.
This initiative comes amidst increasing concerns over maritime safety
