The U.S. Coast Guard escorted the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater out of New York Harbor’s Sail4th 250 Parade of Sail, removing the historic environmental vessel from America’s 250th anniversary celebrations over banners displayed on its mainsail.

The removal happened around 11 a.m., just as dozens of tall ships were taking their positions south of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. Two Coast Guard vessels pulled alongside the Clearwater and ordered it to leave the parade route and its security exclusion zone. The U.S. Navy and the NYPD assisted in the escort out.

The Clearwater had arrived carrying two banners on its mainsail. One read “Save the Clean Water Act.” The other read “Indigenous Rights, Racial Justice, Climate Solutions.” Both featured a drawing of the banjo belonging to Pete Seeger, the American folk singer who first conceived the vessel in 1966 with the aim of drawing public attention to the pollution choking the Hudson River.
