

United States is worried about the presence of Chinese research vessels off the shores of the U.S. Arctic, which could pose a threat to the country’s security.
Atleast four Chinese vessels were seen operating off the Alaskan coast and in the High North this year, compared to five which were first monitored in 2025.
Rear Admiral Bob Little, Commander of the US Coast Guard Arctic District, spoke at the Arctic Security Meet organised in Oslo, saying Chinese ships were seen operating around the Aleutian Islands, in the Bering Strait and even the North Pole.
He added that the U.S. concerns are over Chinese ships operating close to the U.S. exclusive economic zone and the extended continental shelf, since it raises national security concerns.
Moreover, China did not inform the U.S. of its ships’ presence, which is customary in such occasions.
Little also said that when the U.S. Coast Guard asks them the purpose of their operation close to the U.S. Arctic, the answer is simply that
