SALINA, Kan. (KWCH) - A Salina woman was saved from falling victim to a scam after a cashier stepped in.
Salina police confirm that a 72-year-old woman was contacted by someone claiming to be with Apple Security. While on the phone with the suspect, she was told that there was a $249.95 charge on her account, and she’d need to speak with someone at Sunflower Bank.
The suspect transferred her to another suspect, who claimed they worked at Sunflower Bank. The woman was told she had a charge of $22,800 due to a virus she received on a “child porn site.” In order to get rid of the charge, the suspect said she had to go to her bank and withdraw the money out of her account, and then take it to a Bitcoin machine located at 2140 W. Crawford and deposit it.
After the woman withdrew the money and went to deposit it in the Bitcoin machine, the cashier intervened, informing the woman that it was a scam.
