MoF, WCS and CMA CGM United Against Illegal Wildlife Trafficking

CMA CGM Group has strengthened its partnership with Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry and WCS Indonesia to combat illegal wildlife trafficking through the country’s logistics network.

The partners shared the results of the initiative during an event in Bandar Lampung. They also visited the Wildlife Detection Dog (WDD) facility in Kalianda, South Lampung.

The collaboration began in 2024. Since then, it has supported 39 joint enforcement operations across Indonesia.

The partnership has helped authorities rescue 957 animals from illegal wildlife trade networks. Of those, 770 animals have already been released back into their natural habitats.

The programme also conducted port vulnerability assessments to identify smuggling risks. In addition, it trained 127 port officials and enforcement officers from several government agencies.

A key part of the initiative is the Wildlife Detection Dog programme. The specially trained dogs help authorities detect protected wildlife and wildlife products hidden in cargo shipments.

The rescued animals included protected species such as the Sunda pied fantail, Javan leafbird and changeable hawk-eagle.

Dr. Ahmad Munawir, Director of Species and Genetic Conservation at Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry, said stronger monitoring of logistics routes is essential because traffickers often exploit supply chains.

He added that K9 units, staff training and cross-sector cooperation improve the speed and effectiveness of wildlife protection efforts.

Sofi Mardiah, Senior Manager of the Wildlife Trade and Policy Program at WCS Indonesia, said the partnership has strengthened operational readiness while demonstrating that wildlife protection and secure supply chains go hand in hand.

Ikram Ghazali, President Director of CMA CGM Indonesia, said global logistics companies have an important role in preventing illegal trade.

He added that the company remains committed to strengthening safeguards across its logistics network while supporting practical initiatives such as the Wildlife Detection Dog programme.
