DACHSER expands Freiburg logistics center with new food logistics hub
DACHSER has officially opened the new extension of its logistics center in Freiburg, expanding both its food logistics and industrial goods operations.
The company invested around €12 million in the project. The expansion created about 40 new jobs.
The new facility includes a 3,200-square-metre refrigerated transit terminal for food logistics. It operates at temperatures between 2°C and 7°C and handles products such as meat, dairy, baked goods, wine and spirits.
The terminal features 32 loading gates and marks the launch of DACHSER’s Food Logistics operations at the Freiburg site.
DACHSER also expanded its industrial and consumer goods terminal. The company added 2,700 square metres of handling space and eight new truck gates. Part of the new area can also serve as warehouse space for customers.
Michael Gaudlitz, General Manager of DACHSER Freiburg, said the company aims to develop the site into one of DACHSER’s main food logistics hubs. He added that the investment also creates additional capacity for industrial and consumer goods customers.
The location strengthens DACHSER’s international food logistics network. The company currently operates food logistics businesses in 10 countries and serves 34 countries through the European Food Network. The division generated €1.8 billion in revenue in 2025.
DACHSER also expanded the site’s sustainability infrastructure. The company installed additional photovoltaic panels with a capacity of 500 kWp, increasing total on-site solar generation to nearly 1 MWp.
The company is also adding 20 new charging points for electric trucks, increasing the total to 32, alongside a new substation and battery storage system.
The Freiburg site already operates 17 electric trucks and plans to expand the fleet further. Since the end of 2024, DACHSER has served the entire city of Freiburg using only electric trucks and cargo bikes.
The company has also introduced new electric refrigerated trucks. It plans to add another all-electric 16-tonne refrigerated vehicle in the coming months.
Stefan Behrendt, Managing Director of Food Logistics at DACHSER, said Freiburg’s location near the borders of Germany, France and Switzerland makes it an ideal hub for expanding cross-border food logistics and serving markets across southwestern Europe.
