Hengli HI emerges as force in container ship construction
Hengli Heavy Industry (Hengli HI), which opened in January 2023, has become the world’s second largest builder of container ships, with 56 such vessels secured in the first six months of 2026.
The Chinese shipbuilder is part of the Hengli group founded by Chen Jianhua. Active in the petrochemical sector, the Hengli group ventured into shipbuilding by taking over the premises of the now-defunct STX Dalian yard.
