Maersk revises PSS from Far East Asia to Latin America
Maersk has announced several Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) changes for cargo moving from Far East Asia to Latin America.
The carrier initially reduced the surcharge for several destinations in early August. However, Maersk will introduce higher levels later in the month.
The changes cover Mexico, South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
PSS increase to Mexico, West Coast South America, Central America and the Caribbean
From 22 August 2026, Maersk will increase the PSS for shipments from Far East Asia to the following regions:
- Mexico
- West Coast South America
- Central America
- Caribbean destinations, excluding Puerto Rico and Colombia
The carrier will apply the following amounts:
| Container size | PSS |
|---|---|
| 20-foot containers | US$1,000 |
| 40-foot containers | US$2,000 |
Meanwhile, the same levels will apply to Puerto Rico and Colombia from 4 September 2026.
The surcharge will remain in place until further notice.
PSS increase to East Coast South America
Maersk will also increase the PSS from Far East Asia to Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
The new levels will generally take effect on 20 August 2026. However, Maersk lists 22 August 2026 as the effective date for cargo originating in South Korea.
| Equipment | PSS |
|---|---|
| All 20-foot dry containers | US$1,000 |
| All 40-foot dry containers | US$2,000 |
| 45-foot high-cube dry containers | US$2,000 |
| 20-foot reefer containers | US$1,000 |
| 40-foot high-cube reefer containers | US$2,000 |
The East Coast South America adjustment covers shipments from Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Japan.
It also covers Cambodia, South Korea, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore. Thailand, Timor-Leste, Taiwan and Vietnam also fall within the scope.
Earlier PSS reduction
Before the latest increases, Maersk reduced its PSS from Far East Asia to Mexico, West Coast South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
The lower levels took effect on 3 August 2026 for most Far East Asian origins. For South Korean cargo, they took effect on 14 August 2026.
Puerto Rico did not fall within the scope of this reduction.
| Equipment | Reduced PSS |
|---|---|
| All 20-foot dry containers | US$750 |
| All 40-foot dry containers | US$1,500 |
| 45-foot high-cube dry containers | US$1,500 |
| 20-foot reefer containers | US$750 |
| 40-foot high-cube reefer containers | US$1,500 |
Therefore, the later increase raises the surcharge by US$250 for 20-foot containers. It also raises the charge by US$500 for 40-foot containers.
Origin and equipment scope
The C1E surcharge notices cover cargo originating from Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan and Cambodia.
They also cover Mongolia, South Korea, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia and the Philippines. Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam complete the origin scope.
Maersk lists several eligible equipment types. These include dry, high-cube dry, reefer and high-cube reefer containers.
In addition, the surcharge covers bulk, flat rack, open-top, tank and twin-deck equipment. It also covers collapsible flat racks, hive and pallet-wide containers.
Price calculation rules
The revised charges apply to non-SPOT bookings.
For non-FMC shipments, Maersk uses the scheduled departure date of the first water leg. The carrier takes this date from the booking confirmation.
For FMC shipments, Maersk uses the date when the final container enters the terminal.
