Hapag-Lloyd outlines mandatory Kenya ACD requirements
Hapag-Lloyd has informed customers about Kenya’s new Advance Cargo Declaration (ACD) requirements for containerised imports.
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) introduced the new ACD platform on 3 August 2026. The requirement applies to all containerised cargo destined for Kenyan ports.
Shippers, exporters or freight forwarders must obtain an ACD Reference Code before loading. They must also include the code on the final Bill of Lading.
Scope of the ACD requirement
The requirement covers all containerised import cargo moving to ports in Kenya.
Moreover, the final Bill of Lading must display the ACD Reference Code before the cargo departs for Kenya.
ACD number format
The ACD number contains 15 alphanumeric characters.
Example: ACDKE2026004324
The code consists of:
- ACDKE: Five-character prefix containing the reference name and country initials
- 2026: Four-digit year
- 004324: Six-digit sequential reference number issued by the KRA
How to obtain an ACD reference number
Customers must complete the following steps:
- Register or log in through the official KRA ACD portal.
- Upload the required documents to receive a draft ACD.
- Pay the applicable fees to receive the final validated certificate.
- Print the 15-digit ACD number clearly on the final Bill of Lading.
