In the first weeks of August, Russia assembled a convoy of oil tankers unlike anything the Northern Sea Route has carried before.
More than a dozen Suezmax, Aframax, and Medium Range vessels gathered in the Kara Sea, some routed north of 81 degrees latitude waters closer to the North Pole than to the traditional shipping lane.
