Greek companies partner on autonomous surface vessel
Skaramangas Shipyards, Qualco Group and Olympic Marine have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a Greek-designed and built unmanned autonomous surface vessel.
The agreement covers the design, development, production and demonstration of a multi-role vessel. The project targets both the Greek and international markets.
The partners aim to design, program and manufacture the autonomous surface vessel entirely in Greece.
Greek shipbuilding, AI and composite expertise
The project combines the shipbuilding capabilities of Skaramangas Shipyards with Qualco Group’s software and artificial intelligence expertise.
Meanwhile, Olympic Marine will contribute its experience in designing and manufacturing advanced composite hulls.
The three companies will jointly use their expertise, personnel and infrastructure. Their work will focus on the competitiveness, quality and reliability of the final vessel.
The partners will also develop the vessel according to the standards and certification requirements needed for international exports.
Dual-use applications
The companies expect the vessel to support both defence and commercial applications.
Demand for autonomous surface vessels continues to grow as countries focus on maritime security, subsea infrastructure and energy networks.
“Artificial intelligence and digital technologies are key accelerators of modern defence and industrial innovation,” said Orestis Tsakalotos, Executive Chairman, Qualco Group. “Through this cooperation, we aim to develop dual-use solutions that will strengthen Greece’s technological base, contributing both to defence and security and to broader commercial applications.”
Building autonomous maritime systems in Greece
“Skaramangas Shipyards has always been synonymous with Greek shipbuilding excellence,” said Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, Chief Executive Officer, Skaramangas Shipyards. “Through this cooperation, we are combining our history and experience with cutting-edge technology to design the future of autonomous maritime systems with Greek expertise.”
Olympic Marine will support the project through its composite-material capabilities and production facilities.
“Our design and manufacturing expertise in advanced composite materials, together with our modern facilities, finds an application of genuine strategic importance in this project,” said Nikolas Dendrinos, President, Olympic Marine. “We are proud to participate in an initiative that strengthens Greece’s industrial base as a whole.”
