MacGregor reports rising demand for electric cranes
MacGregor recorded strong demand for electric cranes during the first half of 2026.
Electric models represented more than 80% of the company’s total crane order intake during the period. Heavy-lift and multipurpose vessels accounted for most orders.
Container ships also generated a significant share of demand. MacGregor said this segment has experienced renewed activity compared with previous years.
Electric crane technology
MacGregor’s portfolio includes its HCE-series heavy-lift cranes and MCE-series container cranes. Both ranges use Generation 2 variable frequency drive technology.
According to MacGregor, the electric systems can reduce energy consumption by up to 60% compared with traditional hydraulic drives. They also provide greater precision and eliminate the risk of hydraulic oil leaks.
“I’m very happy to see that electric drive technology has become a new industry standard as our customers recognise the significant benefits. By leveraging our long-standing expertise, we continue to deliver solutions that combine precise load control with substantial operational savings and a reduced environmental footprint for our customers,” said Magnus Sjöberg, Executive Vice President of the Merchant Solutions Division at MacGregor.
MacGregor began developing electric cranes more than 20 years ago. Today, operators use more than 800 electrically driven MacGregor cranes worldwide.
The company also provides other electrically driven products, including hatch covers, deck machinery and walk-to-work gangways. In addition, it offers service and maintenance support designed to extend equipment lifecycles.
