SAAM Towage has taken delivery of a new tugboat from Turkish shipbuilder Sanmar as part of its fleet renewal programme.

The company will deploy SAAM Caribe to support LNG terminals in Colombia.

SAAM Towage expects demand in this segment to increase due to Colombia’s growing energy requirements and the effects of the El Niño phenomenon.

SAAM Caribe delivers 72 tonnes of bollard pull

SAAM Caribe belongs to Sanmar’s Boğaçay class and is based on Robert Allan’s RAmparts 2400SX-MKII design.

The tug measures 24.4 metres in length and 12 metres in width.

It can reach a maximum speed of 13 knots and delivers 72 tonnes of bollard pull.

“The SAAM Caribe is a versatile harbour tug with high installed power and top-of-the-line equipment that will strengthen our operations and help us continue to provide reliable and safe service to our customers,” said Pablo Cáceres, Manager of Innovation and New Construction at SAAM Towage.

Tug designed for LNG operations

The tug features twin Z-drive propulsion and holds a Fire-Fighting Class 1 rating for external firefighting operations.

It can accommodate a crew of up to seven people.

SAAM Caribe also features an optimised hydrodynamic design, advanced automation panels and a propulsion monitoring system.

These systems aim to improve the vessel’s performance and energy efficiency while supporting the requirements of LNG terminal operations.

Sanmar completes construction in eight months

Sanmar completed the construction of SAAM Caribe in eight months.

“The successful eight-month construction timeline for the SAAM Caribe highlights how optimised construction processes and sound engineering planning pay off,” said Rüçhan Çıvgın, Commercial Director of Sanmar Shipyards.

“From the first cut of steel to delivery, each stage was carried out to maximise the vessel’s efficiency and reliability,” he added.

“We are proud to deliver a tugboat that reflects both Sanmar’s high-tech shipbuilding standards and the operational requirements of SAAM Towage in Colombia,” Çıvgın concluded.
