Fincantieri and TKMS have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen their cooperation in the submarine and underwater sector.

The two shipbuilding groups plan to establish a formal Collaboration Framework by the end of 2026. The move remains subject to applicable regulatory processes.

The agreement aims to strengthen industrial cooperation in Europe and support future naval projects.

Partnership targets new underwater projects

Under the MoU, Fincantieri and TKMS will explore closer technological cooperation and joint commercial opportunities.

The companies also plan to identify international procurement opportunities that could benefit from their combined capabilities.

In addition, they aim to develop a more integrated underwater industrial ecosystem and identify potential cost synergies.

“Our partnership with Fincantieri demonstrates what European industrial collaboration can achieve when it is built on trust and shared technological excellence,” said Oliver Burkhard, CEO of TKMS.

He added that combining the companies’ expertise could support innovation and create new opportunities for customers.

Companies build on existing submarine cooperation

Fincantieri and TKMS already have a long-standing partnership in submarine construction.

The companies have worked together on the 212A and 212NFS submarine classes.

The latest agreement is designed to expand this relationship into new areas of technology and industrial development.

“Together with TKMS, we are building on a longstanding partnership to create new opportunities in innovation, industrial efficiency and technological development,” said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri.

No merger or acquisition planned

Fincantieri and TKMS stressed that the planned partnership does not involve a merger or acquisition.

Both companies will continue to operate independently. Their existing contracts, programmes and projects will also remain unaffected.

Any future joint activities will need to comply with competition rules, export controls and other regulatory requirements. They will also remain subject to relevant customer approvals.
