Fragmented ship technology raises cybersecurity and data-integration concerns
The shipping industry’s digital transformation could create as many challenges as it solves if shipboard technologies continue to operate in isolation, with fragmented cloud, satellite, IoT and cybersecurity systems leaving data disconnected and potentially expanding the cyberattack surface.
The new “Innovation in the Digital Ship Market” white paper from Rakuten Maritime and ClassNK argues that the growing number of digital solutions being deployed onboard needs to be matched by greater integration, allowing data, operational systems and cybersecurity measures to work together rather than in separate silos.
The push comes as shipping faces a changing operating environment, including population decline and improvements in onboard working conditions, while smart-ship and autonomous-ship technologies continue to advance.
The scale of the digital transformation is also expanding rapidly. According to Allied Market Research, the global maritime digitalization market is projected to reach $423.4 billion by 2031, representing a compound annual growth rate of 10.7% between 2022 and 2031.
The autonomous ship market is also expected to reach $217.6 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 9.5% from 2024 to 2033.
From connected systems to integrated ships
The growing adoption of maritime IoT, AI-based data analytics, cloud computing and smart-ship technologies is generating increasing amounts of operational data. However, the white paper argues that many ship-specific digital solutions remain fragmented, limiting their ability to work together effectively.
This can result in data disconnection, duplicated work, operational inefficiencies and security vulnerabilities, according to the report.
An integrated digital platform, by contrast, could bring ship operations, maintenance and logistics data together, enabling real-time analysis and supporting faster decision-making.
For operators, the potential gains extend beyond data management. Centralising operational information could support predictive maintenance, reduce the risk of equipment failures, improve fuel efficiency and provide greater insight into navigation and vessel performance.
Cybersecurity becomes part of the equation
The integration challenge also has a direct cybersecurity dimension.
As more systems become connected, protecting individual applications in isolation becomes increasingly complex. The white paper argues that an integrated approach can help operators detect and respond to threats in real time, protect shipboard networks and data, and strengthen resilience against cyberattacks.
The approach is also linked to regulatory compliance, with the proposed integrated solutions designed around IACS Unified Requirements UR E26 and E27, which address cybersecurity during ship design and throughout the operational lifecycle.
Under this model, cybersecurity is not treated as an isolated IT function but becomes part of the vessel’s wider digital architecture.
As shipping goes digital, cyber risks move closer to the helm
The shipping industry is becoming increasingly digital, and with that transformation comes a new and growing challenge: cybersecurity. As the volume and complexity of operational and ship-management data continue to expand, so too does the potential attack surface for cybercriminals.
The stakes are particularly high when it comes to Operational Technology (OT). Systems supporting autonomous vessels and other critical shipboard operations depend heavily on accurate, reliable and continuously available data. If that data is manipulated, intercepted or lost as a result of a cyberattack, the consequences could extend far beyond IT disruption, potentially compromising the safety of the vessel and its operations.
The digital perimeter of a ship, however, no longer ends at the waterline.
The emergence of Remote Operations Centers (ROCs) is creating a new link between vessels at sea and facilities on shore. While remote monitoring and control can improve operational efficiency,
