LNG tanker diverts after suspected cyberattack disrupts onboard systems
The LNG tanker Vivit Africa LNG has diverted from its intended destination after its crew lost access to some internal control systems in an incident reported as a suspected cyberattack, Bloomberg reported.
The vessel was sailing east through the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas towards Italy earlier this month when the systems failure disrupted its voyage. The vessel, which had loaded its cargo at the Cameron LNG terminal in Louisiana, was due to deliver the LNG to Rovigo, Italy, but remained off the Italian coast without discharging its cargo.
On Wednesday, it began sailing away from its intended destination towards Algeciras, Spain, according to shipping data compiled by Bloomberg.
The Italian Coast Guard also assisted after the master reported a malfunction affecting systems used to monitor cargo parameters.
There is therefore no official confirmation at this stage that the malfunction was caused by a cyberattack. Bloomberg also reported that there was no indication of who may have been behind the suspected attack.
To remind, two energy tankers bound for Texas were hit by cyberattacks in August while underway, prompting US Coast Guard and FBI teams to board both vessels for multi-day investigations.
