MPC Container Ships has taken delivery of DP World Southampton, a new dual-fuel containership that will enter service under a seven-year time charter with DP World for deployment in Northern Europe.

The vessel, Christened in mid-August, is equipped with a methanol-capable dual-fuel engine and shore power connectivity, technologies designed to reduce emissions compared with conventional containerships. The delivery adds another lower-emission vessel to MPC Container Ships’ fleet as the company continues its transition towards more climate-friendly tonnage.

DP World Southampton was built by Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard and will operate for DP World under the long-term charter agreement. The vessel’s methanol capability provides the option to use methanol as an alternative fuel, while its shore power connection enables it to use electricity from land-based sources while in port, reducing the need to run onboard engines during port stays.

The vessel was delivered with the involvement of several industry partners, including American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Elbdeich Reederei, Nordic Hamburg Shipmanagement and Everllence.

MPC Container Ships said the vessel represents a further step in its efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its fleet and support the decarbonisation of maritime transport.

DP World Southampton will now begin operations in Northern Europe under the seven-year charter.
