ABS Issues AIP and Completes Basic Design Review for SHI's Entire FLNG Topsides Facilities

ABS has issued approval in principle (AIP) and completed a basic design review (BDR) for a natural gas liquefaction system developed by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for the topside of a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit. The certifications were presented at Gastech 2026.

The topside facilities encompass the full scope of process systems required for FLNG operations, including SENSE, which was developed by SHI to cool natural gas to extremely low temperatures for storage and transportation, a core function of FLNG units. SENSE has previously obtained AIP from ABS, and this latest AIP and BDR confirmed SHI’s own design development
