EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas visited the ships last week serving EU naval operations Aspides and Atalanta and received operational briefings. During her visit to Djibouti, the EU official announced the signing of a new strategic deal, the Status of Forces Agreement, which ensures support to the operations of the Aspides maritime mission.
On 16 July, rear admiral Vasileios Gryparis, commander of operation Aspides, welcomed the EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy Kallas and an EU delegation onboard the Italian frigate Bergamini.
During the visit, they met with members of the ship’s crew and received an update on the operation.
Kallas highlighted Djibouti as a highly valued EU partner, stressing that operation Aspides is protecting lives, trade and stability.”
Reviewing field achievements, she noted that over the past 29 months operation Aspides has protected more than 670 merchant vessels and saved 128 seafarers.
