Panstar Group to test Northern Sea Route
South Korea’s Panstar Group is set to conduct a trial voyage through the Northern Sea Route (NSR) later this summer, marking another step in evaluating the Arctic corridor as an alternative to the traditional Suez Canal route, according to DynaLiners
Supported by the Korea Ocean Business Corporation (KOBC), a 3,000 TEU Panstar vessel is scheduled to depart Busan on 22 August for Northern Europe. The vessel is expected to call at Hamburg and Rotterdam, with Felixstowe also under consideration.
The trial will assess the operational and commercial viability of the Northern Sea Route, which offers a significantly shorter passage between Northeast Asia and Northern Europe during the Arctic summer navigation season.
The test voyage follows growing interest from Asian shipping companies in the Arctic corridor as they explore alternative trade routes amid ongoing geopolitical and supply chain challenges affecting conventional maritime passages.
While the Northern Sea Route can reduce sailing distances between Asia and Europe, its commercial use remains constrained by seasonal ice conditions, specialized navigation requirements and geopolitical considerations.
