Houthis warn ships against Saudi port calls

Shipping companies have been warned against loading or discharging cargo at Saudi Arabian ports, with Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement threatening vessels that violate the directive with possible targeting in any location within its operational reach.

The warning, issued in an email sent to multiple shipping companies and reviewed by Reuters, follows the Houthis’ declaration on 20 July of a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia. The move raises concerns over a potential expansion of regional conflict and increased risks to global energy flows and maritime trade.

“Vessels are banned from loading or discharging cargo at or from any Saudi ports,” the email stated, adding that companies should exercise “due diligence and the utmost care” in their operations. The restrictions took effect at 1201 GMT on 20 July, according to the message.

As reported by Reuters, the notice was issued by the Houthis’ Sanaa-based Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center (HOCC), which said vessels involved in such activities could face sanctions and “may be subject to targeting” within areas reached by Yemeni forces.

A potential disruption to shipping through the southern Red Sea gateway could further heighten concerns over global trade routes, limiting alternative options for Saudi Arabia and increasing pressure on energy supply chains.
